Embodied learning — synthesizing insights from neuroscience and psychology with wisdom from the world’s contemplative traditions.

Classes recorded at the beautiful studio in Richmond, Kentucky are designed to introduce the ancient practice of yoga to the modern-day individual. In a gentle and supportive way, our teachers guide participants through yoga postures, breathing exercises, and meditations with suggestions on how to apply these techniques in day-to-day life for greater ease in movement, practical management of stress symptoms, and a deeper connection to the source of life. Enjoy a refreshing time spent in the peaceful environment of the yoga studio, and re-enter your life feeling balanced, centered, and deeply rejuvenated. Recordings are included in the price of each class.

Cancellation Policy. Please give 24-hour notice if you are unable to attend.

ATTENDING CLASS VIA ZOOM:

If you want or need technical assistance during any of these steps, please contact Cara Sparkman by phone at +1 (859) 492-9973.

  1. SELECT which class you would like to attend from the class descriptions and schedules below.

  2. REGISTER for the selected class using the button below the class description, and SELECT the option to attend class via Zoom. HELPFUL TIP: You’ll know you’ve completed registration when you receive a receipt via email.

  3. GATHER yoga props. You’ll need 4 cotton Mexican blankets, a yoga strap, and sticky mat. HELPFUL TIPS: If you do not have these props, blankets can be substituted by large, thick towels or blanket equivalent; blocks by plastic containers or books; and a yoga strap by a bathrobe belt or a couple of neckties.

  4. Three hours before the start of class, CHECK the email account you used to register for class for the link.

  5. Fifteen minutes before the start of class, OPEN the class link from the email account you used to register for class, email subject line “Welcome to class!”

  6. Ten minutes prior to the start of class, PREPARE yourself, your yoga props, and your space. HELPFUL TIP: Dress comfortably, and have your practice space arranged with 4 cotton Mexican blankets, a yoga strap, and sticky mat (or substitutions).

  7. Five minutes before the start of class, SETTLE in for class with your props and viewing device.

  8. ENJOY this time of practice you set aside for yourself, and allow yourself to be completely present.

ATTENDING CLASS IN-PERSON

If you prefer to register and pay with debit or credit card, you may follow steps 1 and 2 above to register for class, selecting ‘in person’ attendance. If you prefer to pay with cash or check, use the contact form to register and bring payment to class. Checks may be made out to “The Essence of Yoga Center.”

When you arrive at 154 Redwood Drive, you may park in the lot, and then walk through the gate to the right of the house. As you walk through the garden and past the pond, you'll see the studio door on your left. There are cubbies for shoes and personal items as you enter the studio on your left. Arriving at least 10 minutes ahead of class start time is recommended. This will allow you plenty of time to gather and arrange your props and to settle in before class begins.

We have plenty of props, including blankets, blocks and straps. You may choose to bring your own yoga mat, but we do have extra mats for your convenience. You may want to bring an eye pillow for your comfort during savasana.


 
 

Core Integration with Cara Sparkman, Co-ed

This 90-minute class is a true ‘somatic meditation’. With a continual focus on coordinating breath and movement, the practice is designed to develop a healthy, integrated core — strengthening the areas of the body that awakens core vitality, support the spine, and provide the stabilization that is necessary to live and move in a graceful and joyful way.

Expect an empowering practice with detailed instructions and a focus on actions that promote greater stability and strength for the entire body, while bringing calmness and ease to the nervous system.


Therapeutic Yoga for Women with Judy Flavell

This two-hour class is designed to bring a sense of openness, strength, and balance to both body and mind. With a focus on developing awareness of body and breath, and learning to coordinate breath and movement, new neural pathways are developed and strengthened, and one’s experience of embodiment shifts toward vitality, fluidity, and ease.

This class addresses the common problems and obstacles that are the result of our postural habits and movement patterns, and provides tools for dealing with them effectively. Stability and coordination are emphasized, while the development of self-awareness is encouraged — the foundation for rebalancing one’s health and attaining a sense of well-being.

Expect a well-balanced and insightful asana practice, with focus on core strength, optimal alignment, and skillful actions in all the poses. A powerful investment toward better health!


 
 

Book a Private Session

Online or in-person, private yoga sessions with one of our experienced teachers will help address your individual concerns. Whether there’s a pose you’d like to examine in-depth, or a specific challenge you’re experiencing (such as illness or injury), a private session will allow us to explore individualized practices designed just for you. Each session (whether online or in-person) is recorded so that you can go back to your personalized recommendations again and again.

Private sessions are available for: movement/asana, yoga nidra, yoga of sound, spiritual counseling and meditation.

Mustard Seed Satsang

On Monday evenings from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., you are invited to join Michael Rice in exploration and discussion of spiritual texts from a variety of traditions. Each week, Michael selects a passage or line from the text currently under discussion, and the gathered group of curious seekers considers the meaning, intention, historical context, and present-day applications of the ancient words.

All are welcome to join this gathering, and preregistration is not required. Come be among friends and feel welcome.
